It's Okay to Talk: Connecting on World Mental Health Day

This year’s World Mental Health Day theme — “Access to services: mental health in catastrophes and emergencies” — shines a light on how vital it is to protect our mental wellbeing, especially in times of crisis.

At Torfaen Talks CIC, we believe that everyone deserves the chance to be heard, supported, and connected — no matter the circumstances. Our mission is simple but powerful: to improve mental health and wellbeing across our community by encouraging open, honest conversations.

Because talking really does help.

Starting a conversation about mental health can reduce stigma, build understanding, and create spaces where people feel safe to share how they truly feel. But we also know it isn’t always easy to find the words or the right moment. Whether you’re ready to open up yourself, or want to check in with someone you care about, here are a few tips to help make that first step a little easier.

💬 Talking About Your Mental Health

If you’re thinking about opening up about how you’re feeling, these steps can help you feel more comfortable and supported:

  1. Choose Someone You Trust:
This could be a friend, family member, or colleague — or even a trained professional through a helpline or counselling service. Think about who might best understand or support you right now.

  2. Pick the Right Setting:
Find somewhere you feel at ease — somewhere private or calm. Sometimes talking while walking or doing something together helps the conversation flow more naturally.

  3. Prepare and Practice Self-Care:
The person you talk to may not always react as you expect. Give them time to process, and consider sharing reliable information if it helps them understand. Afterwards, take time to look after yourself — opening up takes courage and strength.

💚 Talking to Someone Else About Their Mental Health

If you’re worried about someone, reaching out can make a huge difference.

  1. Find a Quiet, Comfortable Space:
Make sure there are few distractions so you can give them your full attention. Simply being present can mean the world.

  2. Listen Without Judgement:
Practice active listening — maintain eye contact, don’t interrupt, and use gentle, open questions. Showing genuine interest can help someone feel safe enough to share.

  3. Ask How You Can Support Them:
Rather than offering quick fixes, ask what they need. It might be help arranging an appointment, tackling everyday tasks, or just keeping things normal.
